Went by that street. After looking past the baffle, all I saw was a darkened street lined with buildings, each with it's own little red light...

That's the funny letter you alsways see in the street names like "Herbertstraße", the famos location of vice in Hamburg, St. Pauli.

Does it take the place of 'ss'? If so, why is it done that way?
