For that matter, are they really "American companies" simply because they're listed on the American stock exchanges.

And pay taxes in the US, and employ Americans? Stuff like that.

And what would you say that about companies like Honda and Toyota that have auto plants in the US. Are they really Japanese?

But I think the term you are looking for is "multi-national corporation."

Personally, I prefer not to buy items made in China but I don't really distinguish whether the company is Chinese, American, Japanese, Taiwanese, or whatever. I don't like China's human rights policies.

But some of my favorite companies have their goods made in China, e.g., Oxo, which makes kitchen utensils with cushiony grips for people with arthritis. Thank goodness they make a lot of their stuff in Taiwan, I don't boycott Taiwan. Oxo is definitely an American corporation, all the office people and the sales people and the web master and so forth are American.
