Slagle, that's an interesting way to look at it. Presumably you'd agree at least that the US has some of the features of democracy (voting, and all that).

You must get a funny feeling when you read GWB's frequent pronouncements about taking democracy to various parts of the world. You must think, "Why is he so keen to give them a political system that the US doesn't have?"

I guess I share your cynicism, but not your extreme beliefs. I share some of Ray's ideas about how the world would be a better place, but not his extreme beliefs. My position on democracy is very unremarkable: a democratic system for choosing governments does not prevent gross injustices, but on average it's a better way to do it than any other. My position on human nature is that I don't see it improving. To me, fascism is innate, at least in the cultural sense (as a meme), or even genetically. It's easy to explain in evolutionary terms why this should be so. That doesn't mean we have to like it, and I don't (I'm with the free-thinkers). But we do need to face it, along with other unpleasant realities.
