I didnt expect Kerry to turn out to be as weak a candidate as he was. I think Bush/McCain or Bush/Giuliani would have a won a much larger victory. My Rumsfeld suggeston has to do with his failures as DOD chief and not much to do about politics although i might have spun it as a positive for reelection. A right wing left wing match up still gives the reps a narrow edge but one of the two parties may wise up and move toward the center. The 2006 election which if one was predicting at this point would be a victory for the dems imo, may change the dynamics further. To help in 2006, the reps need some perceived success in iraq or at least a better news environement with less suicide bombings. Also, a more liberal stem cell position would help as well as a few bills passed by congress thru some sort of consensus approach would play well for a nation that has such little regard for congress.
