Having the government take more and more wealth away from the wealthy isn't the part to stability but rather to economic disruption and sometimes economic catastrophe.

Is there any theory to back that up? or is it just a gut feeling?

Classical economics, Neo-Classical economics, Austrian Economics, and at least to an extent Public Choice economics.
