As a capitalist, what really disgusts me about China today is that they pretend that corrupt crony "capitalism" is actually capitalism, not just a sham, and that the vicious use of bribed government officials and government thugs to rob, steal, kill, maim, and destroy with impunity is the real face of capitalism. Brings back memories of Russia in the 90s... Derek@implode.gov

But bribing government officials so that you can rob, steal, kill, maim and destroy the people that government is supposed to protect -- and getting away with it -- that takes depravity and cynicism that's hard to beat. I hope this is not true. I have no way of really knowing. I just hope, if it is not true, that we do not make self fulfilling prophecies. I have reasons to suspect that what you are saying is not true. It is obvious that the people in China are now vastly better off than they were 25 years ago. I don't see signs that the government is effectively suppressing the people. I don't see a corrupt a visionary like a Joseph Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Kim Il Sung, etc. I don't see how Chinese leaders get their legitimacy. I see China's leadership coming from an old boys network - but mostly from graduates of their technical schools. I just hope that these guys are smart enough to know that they have to transition their government into legitimacy. I see no other way out for these guys. I just hope that I am right. If I am wrong, then we are in for a giant nightmare.
