About 8-10 years ago both Ford and GM were well ahead of the Japanese with their high mileage projects. But because US government showed little interest and the short term economic outlook thus looked gloomy, they killed those projects.

pointing how hybrids have become so popular and how GM completely missed the boat is a good case in point

GM was a driving force in the effort to promote "hydrogen" cars, not so that they could have a fuel efficient vehicle but becasue they could use the idea to stall and government fuel efficiency for a decade or more. That goes beyond stupidity and into the realm of malicious disreguard for the future of the company. I think the 25,000 layed off workers should sue the management.
