From what I have been reading recently, it is simply a convention or tradition that drugs are tested first on animals. Animals are often totally different in their reactions to drugs, so there is no guarantee at all that good drugs will be developed through animal testing, and in fact often animal testing gives no warning sign of inefficient or toxic drugs. There is a huge body of learned people who believe that animal testing is just cruel and wasteful.

What is wrong with compensating humans to test drugs? Humans in their right minds, who can make an intelligent decision, of course. Why do we have the right to enslave animals to do this, anyway? Who or what gave us that right?

There are several states now that have passed legislation requiring that public high schools give students options to dissecting animals in science classes. It seems to be a growing trend, and none too soon! So at least more people are looking at this issue, which makes me very happy.
