Well I can only speak from the union shop perspective but they would be collecting their pension at that point. Also of course if something like that happened on the job they would be covered under workers comp until they could return to work or were re-trained or if too old just retired under workers comp.

I broke my shoulder some years back and worked very hard at regaining it's mobility. Keep with the therapy and get all you can get out of it for recovery. It's tough but well worth the effort.
