The story does not surprise me as the battle of the Atlantic was a bitter one. The Americans had corvetts? That surprises me.

An example of how bitter the Atlantic war was. When Captain Johnney Walker would play "a hunting we will go" over the ships loudspeakers when a U boat was being tracked down and killed.

It's on a news reel from WW2 that I have seen.

Lots of prisoners in WW1 and WW2 were summerly executed by British forces I believe. However it's my impression that British forces have a reasonable record of treating prisoners of war fairly.
