She did smoke. She was 82 and had been smoking since she was a teenager. Had emphysema as well and was on oxygen at times (and yet, my wife, her daughter, smokes. Go figure).

When it was discovered, her tumor was at the point of closing off her trachea. Another week and she'd have strangled to death. As it was, she had surger to remove it, her larynx and half her throat.

All in all, the last year of her life was quite miserable, and I'm sure she wondered why she did the surgery in the first place.
