Validity Of Durbin’s FBI Email In Doubt

Say Anything

This possibility that some of the details in Sen. Dick Durbin’s recent comments about the detention center in Guantanamo Bay weren’t so much fact as an “interpretation” made by Durbin himself has arisen.

WASHINGTON — After a barrage of criticism, Sen. Dick Durbin went to the Senate floor Thursday evening to repeat a controversial statement he made two days earlier and insist he said nothing objectionable.

In remarks first expressed on the Senate floor late Tuesday and then re-read verbatim on Thursday evening, Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, read the report of an FBI agent who described treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. . . .

One knowledgeable official familiar with the memo cited by Durbin as well as other memos said the FBI agent made no such allegation and that the memo described only someone chained to the floor. Anything beyond that is simply an interpretation, the official said.

The email from the FBI agent Durbin based his comments on can be viewed here in PDF format.

The email does mention all of the issues Durbin brought up in his speech on the Senate floor, but here’s the rub
:

Has anybody at the FBI stepped forward to confirm or deny this email? The source of the email itself is anonymous. Something which, in light of some of the recent problems we’ve had with stories based on anonymous sources (Newsweek? The CBS Memos?), should raise a few flags. But who is this Valerie E. Caproni who apparently either received the original email and forwarded it or received it from somebody else and forwarded it?

According to reporting elsewhere she either is general counsel for the FBI or works in that division. Since this email has been public since at least December of last year and was originally sent in August of last year, why hasn’t Caproni stepped forward to confirm or deny that the sender is a real FBI agent who had access to the Gitmo facility?

I’m not ready to outright say that the email is false, but it sure would nice to provide some foundation to the evidence Durbin is using to bash our troops.
