I don't know how the author of that article expects to get such issues resolved by "calling in the philosophers".

If you are seriously interested in supporting the interests of late-term fetuses you don't attach amendments about the rights of stem-cells and if you are seriously interested in protecting women's right to choose you don't make partial-birth abortion part of the package.

I can't say that I really agree with that for either case. Many people who are serious about the less extreme viewpoint, on both sides, are also serious about more extreme positions.

I can agree to this extent. If the less extreme position is really what you are shooting at, and ALL that you are shooting at in this particular area, than it probably doesn't make sense to go for the more extreme position. There would be some benefits to going for the extreme. The main one being that you could make a less extreme claim in to a "compromise position". But that is only a tactical benefit, and when you consider other factors (like alienating those who might have supported a milder position) even the tactical advantage is questionable.
