"Any suggestions to any good European hotels that don't stink of smoke? "

Well, the Hotel Baan in Rotterdam is non-smoking but older. Close to Delfthaven. There is a great Gast Haus outside of Rothenberg aub der Traber in Germany if you are interested. They've been non-smoking for 20 years.

Amy,

smoke hanging around in the curtains is a problem in Europe.
Except possibly for the large US chains, where true no smoking rooms are maintained.

Another tip: In many smaller countries they have B&B "all wood" set-ups in older but quite charming structures, where any smoking on their premises is strictly prohibited due to fire hazard considerations.

Visiting a "restaurant-and-bar non-smoking country" like Italy doesn't automatically mean that the hotels rooms are smokeless. Quite often one gets the impression that in the rooms there they make up for the lack of smokes in the bar...

On the same not, a similar problem - worldwide - : Extremely smoke stinky rental cars!!! What do we do about that one? All those "no-smoking" rental car promises never went anywhere.
A definite no-no here: Never ever rent a Japanese car from Hertz and their peers. Unless it is fresh off the production line, that is. reason: The Japanese mostly rent their own makes and they smoke like crazy in "their" rental cars. Nothing beats a 20,000 miles Toyota rental as for that gas chamber quality...
