I assume you read the essay by Pavel Litvinov criticizing Amnesty International for calling the prison camps on Guantanamo a "gulag."

You assume correctly. There is hyperbole and black-and-white thinking on both extremes. Yes, AI started this, at least this round of it, with their "gulag," which is, of course, way over the top.

I recognize that some people are outraged by the treatment of prisoners and that other people are outraged by any challenge to the establishment. What I have trouble understanding is how they can allow that outrage to short out otherwise functioning brains. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

AI actually called Gitmo a gulag. They said that. Durbin, OTOH, did not say what he is said to have said. Go ahead and bust Durbin for injudiciously fanning flames, but putting words in his mouth is wrong on many levels.
