Only problem is when partisans start relying on hyperbole to make their point.

I know what you mean...like accusing a man you don't know of murder...

re: But when it comes to comparing said torture tactics with those used in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union, that helps no one but our enemies, since the effort to win the hearts and minds of the Middle East will be compromised.

The effort to "win the hearts and minds of the Middle East" IS compromised. Not by me, but by policy that has resulted in torturing ME prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Cuba and God knows how many rendition countries. My WAG is that we are seeing the tip of the iceberg; usually the case with government secrecy.

When we hang a taxi driver from the ceiling in Afghanistan and beat him to death are we any better than the Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union? Does the "they were worse than we are" make us good guys? Or RELATIVE good guys?

You are either a nation that supports torture, or you are a nation that doesn't. We were always the latter, now we are the former. From a practical basis we've lost the high moral ground and a significant part of the reputation of democracies. From a spiritual basis we've lost part of our soul.
