I would not say the principles take a back seat to survival; I think survival is the second highest principal of any organism (the front seat, if you will), right after reproduction (unless you want to see reproduction as a subset of survival, and that's ok with me), and neither of these are necessarily compatible with ideas about natural law. When survival is compatible with civilization, we "seem" to be civilized; when survival is not compatible we see the underlying statum of the ethos of the organism.

Don't get me wrong, I think the idea of natural law is very nice, noble even, I just don't believe in it.
