Nadine, you're right. The Bush people haven't been calling the Gitmo prisoners "lawful combatants."

I think the term is unlawful combatants. That's seem suitable since they aren't combatants in any nation's army and since we don't afford them the protections of the Geneva convention.

Of course that would also seem to place them under the category of criminals but then we like it better when we can hold them as if they were "lawful combatants," and thus deny them the protections that criminals would have, AS WELL AS the protections that would be afforded soldiers.

It's just lucky that the Bush people see everything in the light that affords them the most power with the least checks on that power.

Of course it's not so lucky for those who may blunder into the wrong place and end up on the wrong end of the stick. And it's not so lucky for those of us who actually believe that what we do to them will adversely impact our children and grandchildren. Ed
