I was referring to the book Freakonomics - a best seller, I believe - so no need to get your panties in a wad.

Re car theft, the FBI says car thefts were down 2.6% nationwide last year, though for some reason the western region alone showed a rise. Oddly, LA showed a 10% drop while SF and SJ rose 15% and 23%. Go figure.

BTW, violent crime was down 1.7% while property crime was down 1.8% in 2004. From 1994 to 2003, violent crime was down 26%, property crime was down 14% and motor vehicle theft was down 18%.

How to explain auto theft out west when every other major stat is improving? Perhaps it's cultural.
