To be fair we've seem some in your face insults from LWE's (left wing extremists). However I can't think of any moderator quite as patient as Grainne- perhaps Faultline, who was (imo) almost perfect- but most moderators are humans (even Faultline was human), and humans generally don't like to be treated badly, insulted, or ridiculed.

If one is on SI to fight, then "in your face" is the fastest way to get a fight- and if liberals won't go to the fight, the conservatives have to come get them, which reflects on them what it reflects on them- and that's all there is to it. Come on- you've seen the posts "Liberals won't fight...blah blah blah", "Liberals won't show up and duke it out...blah blah blah." I don't know why some people don't just figure out that maybe fighting isn't productive, and might not be what most people want to do. I don't know anyone in 3d who is very interested in fighting. No one I know comes to our house to get in our face. In fact, I've never met anyone at work like that either. Thank goodness. Now if only SI could become as nice as 3d...wouldn't that be lovely?

Grainne and I disagree on many things, but I have absolutely no desire to get in her face, or ridicule her, or fight with her in any way. I enjoy her different way of looking at things, and since this is her thread, I respect her thread as if it were her home, and I will take the direction that she gives me when I post here. If one wishes to make a permanent home on a thread one should respect the moderator (or complain about being banned when it's obvious they could never get along with the moderator). I've no idea why people post often on threads where they do not like the moderator, or wish to insult the moderator, or only go to fight with the moderator. I can understand going to make a few comments, especially if something is perceived as unfair, but to stick around? What's the point, other than fighting? And isn't life a bit too short to spend it on negativity. Any one of us could be dead tomorrow. Many folks from SI are already gone, and we can all hope they thought, as they died, that they spent their lives well. Being mean is not a good way to spend the minutes you have left- no matter how many you think you have.

Before we post the next insult, before we blast someone, or treat someone with disrespect who has done nothing more than have an opinion we disagree with, we should all think about how we would feel if that post were our last- because some day we will post our last post. It would be nice to go out with some grace, kindness, and charity.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me, Coug. I realize being a vegan and arguing for animal rights is kind of novel, especially for people from the farm belt who have spent their whole lives using animals. I realize that if you do use animals, it is difficult to really think about them very much, because then you would have to think about what you are doing to them.

I think people who make comments about how great meat tastes or taunt me in other ways are on a very deep level perhaps threatened by someone doing something really differently than they do. I also think that in many parts of the country, meat is a huge part of the culture. When mad cow strikes heavily, maybe some of them will reevaluate. In any event, their comments give me a chance to debate them, and perhaps some people will consider a different point of view, or at least listen somewhat respectfully.

At the same time, I do not discount the potential connection between rudeness, arrogance, narrowmindedness and the supporters of the administration in power. It is totally obvious, for example, that the Bush administration has no shame at all and must consider its followers just plain stupid, because how would intelligent people buy all of their lies?
