Re: She is ridiculous. She's running around the ME telling people what they can and can't do.

Which somehow hints at a deeper problem: EVERY US State Secretary looks ridiculous in the eye of American pundits... Actually, the whole State Department is routinely dismissed as a fussy, ineffectual bureaucracy. The Pentagon brass, military intelligence (as opposed to the CIA, FBI), on the other hand, are beyond reproach --except for the odd "bad apple", of course... Smacks of a military takeover, doesn't it?

I don't see it that way but that's not to say my fellow Americans agree with my position. I have often wondered why the Sec. of State, one of the more important positions in the cabinet, was one of the first to be filled by a woman. Were the male presidents trying to downplay the importance of the position by putting a woman in that position? And I am not saying that women can't do the job and do it well but there is still the perception among some men that they are not up to certain tasks.

Having said that, Madeline Albright was not running around the ME behaving like a loose cannon and acting as a parental authority all in one like Rice is. I never felt embarrassed by Albright's behavior. She may not have been all that successful but she knew what to say in public and what to say privately. With Rice, she speaks inappropriately and accomplishes little.....the worst of all worlds.

As for the Pentagon, I have never been impressed with their competence. Unfortunately, they do seem to be above reproach.
