My ideas about animals are complicated. I would always be relieved if people ate less beef, because I think our food supply is contaminated with mad cow that the government is trying to keep under wraps, and I wish that people would not eat it because I don't want them to suffer.

I also think that any move away from red meat is a move towards better health in general. I want people to be healthy and live a long time. I also think vegetarianism is a journey, and often starts this way, very gradually.

I don't think that the lives of chickens or fish are any less significant than the lives of cows or sheep or pigs, however. So personally, I don't eat any of them. Having said that, I am glad when people switch to organic meat, because these animals are fed well and enjoy some aspects of normal animal lives before they are killed humanely. I am a pragmatist, and will take anything I can get that is better for animals, really, one animal at a time.
