i remember back in 50's when they were building rte 95 north to south on northeast coast. they wanted to right through the northshore of boston, take out Saugus , Lynn, etc. prime real estate residentual housing to make sure the road went straight.

I believe they took complete neighborhoods and condemned them. Families lived there for several generations. The houses remained for at least ten years borded up or bulldozed down and vacant lots. Part of the 95 was going to run across a few miles of marsh land and parts of Saugus river.

I forgot how it all ended but the road was turned and circled around to take the least neighborhoods in these cities and towns and construction was finished.

I expect some court case changed the direction of rte 95. It also took a different path through the rest of the towns north of boston to new hampshire.
