You bring up the wrong parallel: Israel is to the US what Algeria was to France. And likewise, the US is separated from Israel by an ocean. The major difference between the US/Israel and France/Algeria couples is that the former is driven and sustained by religious fanaticism whereas the latter relied on (French) history and jingoism. It was you who originally made the comparison between the two relationships: France and the Algerian Muslims vs Israel and the Palestinians, not I. I simply was responding. Re: France felt it was part of its manifest destiny to occupy Algeria in order to siphon off Algeria's resources... That was true in the early stages of France's Algerian conquest --back in the 1830s! Algeria's independence war, however, broke out in 1954, 124 years later. At that time, over one million Pieds Noirs couldn't contemplate --never contemplated-- the prospect of leaving Algeria or relinquishing their privileges in ruling her... Although they held a French passport, most Pieds Noirs considered Algérie Française as their real fatherland. Some families like the Maltese Sultana's had been living in Algiers since the 1800s.... Yes, and no. That was part of it but also Algeria has reasonable quantities of oil and natural gas.....something La France Central is short of. Algeria was France's personal oil well. It wasn't until Algeria was independent that France began to tax the hell out of gas. The Pieds Noir were important but I bet the oil was even more important. BTW why did they call them Black Feet? What a weird name. Was it because they were farmers mostly? ted
