The logic is flawed on many fronts. First, it assumes that hedge funds operate in concert, communicating with each other to coordinate positions. That is wrong. Second, it assumes that hedge funds are necessarily short tech and long energy. There are many funds that aren't. Heck, I know of funds for whom the exact opposite is true. The vast majority of hedge funds don't even take both commodity and stock positions. And finally, as you note, the amount of capital that hedge funds have devoted to commodities isn't nearly enough to control the price of crude oil.
