Fallujah Bomb Attack Kills 5 U.S. Marines, Hurts 10, NBC Says

June 24 (Bloomberg) -- Five U.S. Marines died and 10 others were wounded when a suicide car bomber drove into a 7-ton military vehicle in the Iraqi city of Fallujah, NBC News reported today, citing unidentified Marine officials.

Three of the dead were female and two were male, the broadcaster reported on the MSNBC Web site. The military said in an e-mailed statement that two Marines were killed and 13 others were wounded, and that it was trying to determine the status of three other Marines and a sailor who also were in the vehicle.

The death toll is the highest in a single day for female service members in Iraq, NBC said. A total of 44 female members of the U.S. military have died in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, according to NBC.

The vehicle that was attacked carried 19 people, and was taking a U.S. military civil affairs team to perform checkpoint searches of Iraqi women, NBC said. It wasn't immediately clear whether the Marines were part of the team.
