"To some on the right, these lunatics are heros. "

I am sure there are some who think so but I doubt that they are representative.

Extremism involves loyalty to tribe, religion, race, national origin, extreme liberal chaos, extreme oppressive totalitarianism, etc. It is the false sense of devotion to a heritage within a group that tends to corrupt one to the extreme.

The interesting aspect of this is that the extremist is always willing to champion the label that identifies them even to the sacrifice of the principles underlying such a label.

For example tribalism is founded on love of a brother and respect for common humanity and tradition. However the extremist will sacrifice all humanity and principle that founded such tradition, to hold his tribe's flag a little higher than the flag of another; thus nullifying the basis for honoring such a flag in the first place.

No matter where people are in the political spectra, it seems holding your lamp over some extreme element from another camp is a common tactic. Everyone seems to be able to identify an extremist enemy. Where as, few are able to recognize this enemy within their own groups.
