Extracting oil from Iraq to repay our costs of liberation. Well, given the way the world is - it just won't happen.

We could have forced Europe to pay us for liberating them from Hitler, but we didn't. We did the opposite through the Marshall Plan.

After WWI, the allies imposed massive reparations on Germany - the judgement of most is it damaged their economy and helped pave the way for the Nazis to seize power.

If we can assist the Arab countries to begin democratizing and modernizing that will do much good for us in the long run. We did this in Europe after two major wars and Europe attained peace (accepting the Balkans) since.

We did the same in the far east and now Japan, SK, Taiwan, and other countries are peaceful allies.

Fostering the same in the ME will be wonderful for the US in the long run. We've already seen Libya abandon their WMD programs, Syria pull troops our of Lebanon, and seen free elections in a few countries.
