The first thing that came to my mind was that the kids did something really dumb. Maybe it's an urban legend but when I was a kid my mom used to scare me with stories of kids who got trapped playing in refrigerators and trapped playing in car trunks and trapped playing on top of big old rock piles. (The rock piles shows you the type of neighborhood I grew up in - down by the river.)

She swore a cousin of mine put a pocketknife through his "peter" sitting on a tree stump, playing mumbledy-peg. Now that I am older, I doubt it.
