Things have changed vastly since the 70s. The vast majority of funds are indexed and forced to stay put in companies that comprise the baskets. They have a vested interest in not upsetting the applecart, such as accounting issues, corporate malfeasance, and economic data. In a nutshell, indexed funds are not investors.
