It's certainly true there not all the same... only the better ones hopefully get to be professors at grad schools and give more out, but I'm not so sure.

But the bottom line is that a PhD is just an entry ticket to academia (more like it gives an option to other people to hire you :)) or industrial research. But new PhDs haven't proved they can do much yet in 90% of the cases.
