try this...flip the router over and there is probably a little hole that says "reset". while plugged in stick a little pin in there and hold it for a couple of seconds. that should get the router back to factory setting and then go from there

Eva, if nothing else you should have the password for the router software, just in case you have to check or make changes.

After resetting the router - as hcm1943 suggested - the password may be left blank and the name is probably 'admin'. But your manual will tell you what those defaults are. If you have no manual it can probably be downloaded . If you post brand and model of your router, someone here will help you.

Leave the name blank and try "admin" for the password. That's the Linksys default.

Eva, try this, I don't know if it will help but it won't hurt.
START>RUN TYPE IN SERVICES.MSC ...ENTER should take you to services local
scroll down to wireless configuration zero... double click... is it started and automatic. if so OK.. if not make it automatic and apply... then click start and ok ...http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prdc_mcc_kqmu.asp
