as a renter of a cableco DVR (SciAtlanta HD-DVR), i can see why cablecos want Tivo: my SciAm unit sucks big time (but at least it's HD, and has two tuners). but when you give away a "free" device which actually costs you $150 or so, there is not a lot of profit left over. especially when the max revenue on the unit is $300 for its lifetime, and you have other costs as well.

actually, i prefer Windows MCE 2005 watching on my tv with a Linksys Media Center Extender. i also look forward to using the Extender which will be included with the new Xbox 360, and i believe is the true "Trojan Horse" from MSFT which will eliminate the need for a direct-purchase Tivo.

i think it would make a lot of sense for more cablecos to adopt Tivo, but that's different from the original direct service model.
