I see this as a couple of different issues....

First, as far as moderated threads go IMO, people should be free to associate or NOT associate with those folks they want to.....so moderated threads don't bother me as long as the moderators are honest about the "gatekeeping" and why folks are excluded.

As far as diversity goes, I tend to agree on unmoderated threads. Letting all competing ideas be vented has its utility up to a point....after a while however, the "ideas" from the thread lunatics (like Duranged, AS, whackode00, Evile, cavedin, Cyberken) tend to interfere with a real discussion....so diversity is good to a point and then suffers diminishing returns.....the trick is in knowing where to draw the line.....
