I think I saw where Ford was testing a hybrid Explorer and I know Honda will have or has a hybrid Accord.

That is an excellent idea. I was having much the same discussion with some folks on the Former AMD thread. If we made our cars multifuel capable, then our consumers would be less dependent on oil and it becomes less likely that two commodities (corn and oil) experience high prices at the same exact time. That decreases commodity price risk to our economy, just as having stocks and bonds both in your portfolio decreases portfolio risk.

Oh and btw, for the Curtis Bemis' of the world, all of this is related to Cisco. Oil is like a big weight on our stock market and our economy. If our stock market and economy are doing poorly, so will Cisco. So these discussions are very relevant for investors that actually still need the stock market to do well to ensure a decent retirement.
