Re: they are more limited in product range

Actually, I believe the reverse is true - most of AMD's recent gains have come because there are whole segments where Intel's product range is so limited that AMD faces no competition, whereas Intel faces AMD competition in pretty much every segment it sells to.

and units per product.

So what? If AMD can't supply the entire market they shouldn't be allowed to supply any of the market? Are you shooting for a soviet style commisariat of CPUs, refrigerators, etc?

Jon,

Working in parallel, AMD is gradually removing these limitations.

re: The mfrs needed access to the full range of chips and other associated products and could not afford to snub Intel given AMD's capacity limitations, historical delays and technical glitches, etc

That's Intel's line, but its pure BS. If you are selling 100% Intel right now, and getting 25% CPU discount, how can you afford to come out with a line of Turion notebooks that *might* capture 10% of your sales, if Intel changes your CPU discount to 15%?

The answer is, YOU CAN'T! And it has NOTHING to do with capacity limitations or technical delays. Even with perfect execution by AMD and infinite capacity, such monopolistic behavior makes it impossible to gain market share.
