I'm not so sure. Before the 20th century, nobody had much use for petroleum. Land where it oozed out was undesirable. There may be a period of painful transition, but I'm sure we'll find some other way to make everything go. As oil becomes more dear, other technologies will become competitive and necessity, that mother of invention, will come into play.

Maybe I'll get that flying, nuclear car I was promised in the late fifties! Refuel once a decade. No lighting needed - it glows in the dark.
