The thing is, the NDX is dominant in trend direction. If the up trend is ending, the COMP will out-perform the NDX (remember 2001-2002 when the COMP hit a higher high in Jan 2002, but the NDX did not, not unlike our recent divergence).

If the primary trend has shifted to down, the NDX will lead the COMP down. If the trend has changed from down to up, the NDX out-performs the COMP on the last legs of the down (not dropping as much) and gets out of the gate faster than the COMP.

I've been watching this happen for 4-years, and it's present at all the major lows and highs I've seen from what I can recall.
