"What Bush Meant to Say"
_______________________________________________

Good evening.

I am hiding behind the prestige of the US military tonight because my poll numbers are bad. Real bad. Maybe some of the support for you will rub off on me....

My greatest responsibility as president is to protect the American people. I failed to do that on 9/11 and then I started an unnecessary war that's killed more than 1,700 Americans -- with no end in sight.

But, September 11th, September 11th, September 11th, September 11th, September 11th. You were all scared that day -- very scared. Don't ever forget that feeling of fear and dread. Hang on to it, let it seep back into your consciousness. You listen to me more when you're scared out your mind.

However, the terrorists who attacked us are NOT the terrorists we now face. I just try to confuse you about that because Karl says it helps me politically.

The insurgents in Iraq are just protecting their country from an outside aggressor. In this case, that's us -- that is, er um, me. They're fighting for their freedom to decide what kind of government they want to have -- free from outside interference.

They fight because they know that the survival of their sovereignty is at stake. To achieve these aims, they are willing to fight and die.

Amid all this violence, I know Americans ask the question: Is the sacrifice worth it?

The answer is: hell no. It wasn't worth it to begin with and since it's gone so wrong it's certainly not worth it now. Heck, if it had been worth it, I wouldn't have had to lie to get us into this mess.

In the past year, we have made no significant progress. In fact, things are getting worse -- much, much worse. And, the coalition of the unwilling keeps growing.

And, it's very expensive. It's cost us $200 billion so far, and it's going to cost alot more before it's over. There's no money for anything else. Fire departments are closing, hospitals are closing, states are broke, communities are broke. Medicare and Social Security are gonna be bankrupt in like three weeks because of my mistakes. God you all are gonna be pissed when you find out that the money that's been taken out of your paychecks is already blown in the desert of Iraq.

I wish my daddy hadn't sold so many weapons to Iraq.

I wish had not gone AWOL during Vietnam so I would have had a better idea of what [we face] before I started this mess.

God, we're so screwed.
