The population, as with most of Africa has gone up a good deal since I left, so that impacts feeding themselves, and draught years come and go there as well, another issue.

Mugabe will die someday. The interesting thing is that Zambia and Botswana where kind of basket cases (governmentally) back then, but are actually doing better now. It's Zimbabwe that is the great basket case now. It's a pity that it is so difficult to drum the notion of law and order into a societies collective head. Iraq included

That reminds me of the American I had a beer with while in Ghana. He grew up in in South Africa, then emigrated to American and joined the Navy and became a citizen. He was white and joked with me and a a couple of my black buddies that he was a "real African American, you can't even spell Ghana".
