Did you read the article Ted posted about Basra? The Basra that Elroy holds up as the symbol of success for the US strategy.

My article was from a ME newspaper, an Arabic writer, and based on a visit to Basra last week.

Ted's article was from how long ago?

27 June 2005.

A US writer, and with what agenda?

One of several reporters from different countries reporting similar incidents. Are you suggesting a conspiracy?

Which article do you think is more likely to be accurate?

Like your writer, all of the reporters indicate that Basra is more peaceful. Where they differ mainly is when it comes to religious fervor and the implications it has for the average Iraqi. Your Arabic reporter doesn't mention it. The non Arabic reporters do. No surprise there. If your reporter is from Saudi Arabia or the Gulf region, he probably thinks the behavior is relatively normal.

The local ME papers LOVE to criticize the situation in Iraq, and have no incentive to paint a rosey picture where there is none. The LA Times and NY Times, on the other hand, go make your own decision.

I think you can't face the truth, and so in addition to the local censor, you impose your own self censoring of anything that doesn't fit your POV.
