How Much Is That Kidney In The Window?
Analysis by Donald
legendgames.net

I do hope that it is for sale. Actually, it probably already is if you know where to shop. Organs, especially kidneys, are for sale in many countries. Most people have two kidneys and can part with one, usually without adverse health consequences. Add to this the fact that many, many people need kidneys (more than 61,000 at present) and you have an instant market.

However, this market is not the laissez-faire model which many would like to see. It seems that the government has dictated which pieces of your body you can sale and which you cannot. For example, men can sale their sperm and women can sell eggs. Sperm apparently goes for about $75.00 a pop, while eggs fetch a far higher price, somewhere in the range of $5000 to $8000 per donation. Read What Is Your Body Worth for more information on parting out your body.

In many countries, the selling, both voluntary and involuntary, of human organs is becoming more and more commonplace. Human Organs for Sale tells you about a few of the countries where you can get a slightly used organ if you need it. Organ Watch has an interactive map showing recent activity in organ sales, transplant tourism, and the like and the Guardian Unlimited recently published a story about transplant tourism in Pakistan.

For those who need an organ and do not have the time nor the money to go on an organ buying trip, there is always the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). Even though UNOS is government sanctioned, their grip on organ transplants in the US may be getting a bit slippery.

It began with people advertising for organs. Then there was the person who advertised a kidney for sale on Ebay which had a bid of $5.7 million before Ebay pulled the ad. Even though it turned out to be a hoax, it demonstrated the potential of the internet for both buyers and sellers.

No doubt, a demonstration that MatchingDonors.com paid attention to. This site, which makes it possible for donors and patients to link up, has already successfully matched several donors and recepients.

In addition to organs, tissue is a hot market these days. This is especially true because the human tissue industry is largely unregulated and very profitable.

The Ins and Outs of Selling Human Tissue explains, "Nonprofit tissue banks are part of increasingly for-profit $500 million industry where tissue is collected by nonprofit charity and sold by for-profit companies that turn body parts into products."

It seems everyone is making money from transplants except the donors. The doctors, hospitals, and well-paid executives of the nonprofits are all against the selling of organs. They claim that it will cause a misdistribution of organs, but others disagree, as The Case for Selling Human Organs states.

Putting all of the academic argument aside, the bottom line is that if you need an organ, you are probably for the buying and selling of organs. If not, then in the grand American tradition, you probably do not care.

Should There be a Market for Human Organs? and Pitt.edu both have a large collection of links, if you wish to read more on this matter.

For a slightly different view, Islamet explains the Islamic view on the matter. It is a common-sense and realistic view of the situation.

Happy shopping. See you at the Organ Goodwill shop.
