I got into a debate on an airplane about the desirability of Florida living with a gal who works for a developer (not so much a debate as her getting really angry at me for not toeing the party line).

I was arguing that there are plenty of seedy neighborhoods in PBC and she was arguing that urban renewal would take care of that problem. The fact that these areas had been seedy for four decades was of no import. What really opened my eyes are the $280k townhomes they built on Dixie Hwy on the Lake Worth side of the spillway just across from WPB ... $280k to have drunk snook fishermen, homeless people and hookers pee on your lawn?

Amazing to me given that the prices of homes in that area are based in part on their distance from Dixie Hwy. that someone would build luxury townhouses ON Dixie Hwy.

Florida always has been and always will be plenty seedy for all but the wealthy.

Yes, but you've forgotten Haulover. That makes up for all the rest of that. Doesn't it <G>

One thing i miss about Miami are $30-40/night art deco hotels in South Beach in late 80's or $100/night beachfront motels in late 90's. Now they are being demolished and replaced with 800K condos and $500/ night hotel rooms.

As recently as 1999 i was staying at a small, but very nice motel in Lauderdale by the Sea. An oceanfront 2 bedroom suite with a patio, right on the sand for $140 a night.
Much more pleasurable stay than on 7th floor of the Sheraton Bar harbour at $300/night.
