JF, They do it for principle, not for money.

The money helps foster the mentality. Now the "martyr" has to worry less about supporting his family, allowing him to be more focused on the task.

By the way, you're trying too hard to justify their "cause" and minimize other factors, such as Saddam's cash payment to the families of those who murder innocent civilians.
