Don > the South African Rand is up 56% against the USD in the last 3 years. Most of the ROI in the chart you posted reflects the devaluation of the USD rather than appreciation of South African blue chips.

You can take your pick depending on where you are -- but you have to be somewhere. Either way you would have done OK. If you are in SA, then this is what you would have experienced:

And if in the US, then you would have had the added advantage of rand appreciation against the USD, as you mention.
