No. Kerry voted for the war. End of story. And you are right; if my grandmother was still alive, he couldn't explain it to her. Why? Cuz she was the third person in the country to be against Vietnam,. and it only took her 2 years to convince me.

Kerry did explain his policy clearly. In fact he did it on Hardball in front of the Citadel months before the invasion. And turns out he was 100% right. Later on, the Bushies just kept blasting him with smears and mocking ads which confused the issues and turned everything upside down. It was dirty politics at its finest. Making a truth-teller look like a liar and vice versa. But enough is enough. No more rightwing regimes in this country.
