Actually, Iran was destablized under Nixon-Ford when we refused to prop up the corrupt Shah. Carter inherited an Arab revolt (complete with an oil embargo) as oil-rich Arabs flexed their muscles, a falling Shah and huge Vietnam war debt. He stepped into a shitstorm and never figured out what to do about it.

Carter was in no position to invade Iran at the time. Nixon and Ford had no interest in doing so either. But what Carter did do was make big progress in Israel-Palestine and with the Soviet Union, setting things up for Reagan and Gorby to finally start making peace. He also started a huge clean fuels program which Reagan unfortunately completely cancelled. Boy could we have used that. Like Bush, Reagan was also in the pocket of Big Oil, just not as much.

You know, come to think of it, I'll bet we helped start the war between Iraq and Iran just so we wouldn't have to kill the Islamics ourselves, and of course our ally was Saddam. Messy area. Terrible idea to occupy Iraq without a huge coalition. I don't know what Bush was thinking. Huge huge blunder. We will not win that war. Best we can hope for is avoiding disaster.
