Read "The Prize, about the history of the oil biz and you will find out that Carter came into power just as the Shah was already hanging by a thread. The trouble had begun five years earlier. It was a timebomb about to go off. And a lot of it had to do with oil company commissions vs. oil nations commissions.

The oil isn't about the oil, it's about how much of a commission western oil companies have to pay the local government. 1978 or so was when the Arabs decided to try and halfway nationalize their oilfields.

One reason why Texas Bushies may have invaded Saddam so recklessly. Lust for oil with tiny commissions. Like the good/bad old days.
