You know, ironically, I have a tremendous isolationist streak running through me. Whenever I see our American boys all around the world trying to police it and make it better, I think to myself, Lord, why can't we just bring them all home and focus on our problems here in the U.S. Then I wake up and realize that the relentless march of globalization is not something you can hide from. To survive, you need to be ENGAGED. The only thing we have a true choice in is the MANNER in which we engage. The liberals have it correct when they say Bush has not engaged in the best way with the world. I agree with that. But the answer is not to completely disengage. There is an interconnectedness among humans the world around now that cannot be ignored. It's alot like maturity in adults. When you are a child, you often believe the world is your oyster. If you will it, then anything is possible. You don't need others to help you make your dreams come true. You have the power to make anything happen on your own. Then as you grow into an adult and mature, your dreams don't necessarily go away, but they are tempered in the forges of reality. You begin to realize that you can't do it alone. Your dreams are still possible to achieve, but you need others to achieve it...and it all depends on the MANNER in which you engage. Leaving the world and the Middle East to it's divisiveness, repression, economic backwardness, etc, is not the answer. America may be the only country with the power, the economic might, and the will to lead the world in making it better, which will ultimately benefit the U.S. most, because our country is structured in that way economically. But that's a tall order, so we need a government that is up to the task. The Bush administration is not up to that task. They have proven that all problems are a nail in need of a sledgehammer. And that bothers me. We need to wage our war for our ideals with diplomatic, economic, ideological, and military power, not just military power alone.
