I think we should call for a vote BY IRAQIS during the December elections as to whether we should go by a date certain. We should have asked them that during the last elections and even insurgents would have turned out to vote.

If we said we were going to pull out in 1 year because, logistically, it would take us that much time to pull out why wouldn't insurgents say, okee dokee why bother fighting the Amuricans because they're going to leave anyway? Better to start fighting each other for power and, say, we may be able to do that politically anyway.

Saddam managed to keep jihadists out of Iraq. It would seem that without Saddam and without sanctions Iraqis could do at least as well.

So, if we say we're going to pull out, that gives Iraqis tremendous incentive to ignore us and start arguing with each other as to how to share power and stop the influx of terrorists. They want foreign investment don't they? They want the oil industry to make them rich don't they?

Why would giving a date to go result in more violence?

<“Most of us who have had personal war experiences strongly believe this great country is worth fighting for at risk of lives. My World War II Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman's Badge on the wall behind my desk remind me of that daily.

"They also remind me that war is hell, that we must fully support our servicemen and women and put their lives at risk only for honest and just and noble causes.”>

Well said
